The Confess Project of America and AmeriHealth Caritas Georgia Team Up Break Mental Health Stigmas
Organizations collaborate on mission to build awareness and break stigmas around mental health within the Black community
May 30, 2023 - Atlanta, Ga.
The Confess Project of America (TCPA), a national not-for-profit organization, and AmeriHealth Caritas Georgia, a Medicaid managed care organization, today announced they are teaming up to help combat mental illness in Georgia communities. As part of the collaboration, AmeriHealth Caritas is donating $25,000 to boost a TCPA mental health initiative.
Atlanta-based TCPA is America's first mental health awareness movement. Recognizing that patrons often open up to discuss their inner feelings with barbers or stylists, TCPA trains those professionals to become mental health advocates, with the mission to build awareness and break stigmas around mental health within the Black community. The new collaboration with AmeriHealth Caritas Georgia creates opportunities for expansion and will help TCPA work with a local line of businesses to increase awareness and further the organization’s positive mission to even more communities.
To date, TCPA has successfully trained more than 2,000 barbers across the country as mental health advocates. The organization reaches more than 2.4 million people each year in 48 cities and 28 states, and expects to see additional vulnerable Georgians served through the joint effort with AmeriHealth Caritas Georgia.
AmeriHealth Caritas Georgia is part of the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies, which focuses on improving the health of its members and preventing social and economic barriers that keep them from proper care. The organization’s support of TCPA will support program expansion in rural areas and provide mental health training programs for barbers to become mental health advocates in their communities.
“We’re proud to be teaming up with an organization so dedicated to breaking mental health stigmas surrounding Black men and boys in rural communities,” said AmeriHealth Caritas Georgia Market President Marla Purvis. “This is an outstanding opportunity for us to work with a forward-thinking initiative and further our mission to build healthy communities across the state.”
