AmeriHealth Caritas, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and health care solutions for those most in need, announced today that Paul A. Tufano is stepping down as CEO of the company, effective September 1. A national search for the company’s new CEO is being conducted. Thomas Hutton, EVP and General Counsel of AmeriHealth Caritas’ parent company, Independence Health Group, and a member of the AmeriHealth Caritas board of directors, will assume the role of interim CEO as the search is underway. Hutton is a seasoned healthcare executive and has served on the AmeriHealth Caritas board of directors since 2020.
Tufano is a visionary leader who has served as CEO since 2014, guiding the company to multi-billion dollar growth, while maintaining the mission-driven focus that has helped define AmeriHealth Caritas. The company has nearly quadrupled in size under Tufano’s leadership, achieving $20 billion in revenue for 2022, with over 9,500 employees across 13 states and the District of Columbia. During Tufano’s tenure, AmeriHealth Caritas expanded its operations to multiple states and tens of thousands of lives.
“I am incredibly grateful to our associates for their significant and meaningful contributions to the growth and success of our company. Together we have established an unshakeable culture based on compassion, respect, integrity and collaboration,” said Tufano. “It has been a privilege to work in service of our members, each and every day. As I begin this next chapter, I look forward to spending more time with my family while continuing to support innovative solutions to help end poverty in this country.”
“We thank Paul for his strong leadership and stewardship of AmeriHealth Caritas,” said Charles Pizzi, Chairman of the company’s Board of Directors. “This mission-driven joint venture between Independence Health Group and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan has vastly expanded its footprint, bringing our unique whole person approach to millions of vulnerable Americans. The company is poised to continue its growth and success in the years to come.”
Independence Health Group and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, which jointly own AmeriHealth Caritas, have expressed complete confidence in the company’s leadership team.
